The American Red Cross is a great organization. When I had my fire back in 2000, the Red Cross was there at 4 am to get me to shelter.

Residents to ride in Tour du Rouge for Red Cross

Gainesville — State Farm agent and Gainesville Mayor Jim Goldsworthy is set to explore some beautiful scenery via bicycle as he logs hundreds of Gulf Coast miles for a good cause.

Goldsworthy is slated to ride in the Tour du Rouge from Houston to New Orleans. The 533-mile Tour benefits the American Red Cross and is scheduled for May 4 through May 9.

Cyclists who participate in the ride must raise $10,000 for the Red Cross. The money, Goldsworthy said, helps the Red Cross continue its good work.

“The Red Cross is always the first on the scene of a disaster,” he said. “They’re always there to help folks. We hope we won’t need them but the Red Cross is there when we do.”

The relief organization will also play an important role in the Tour.

“The Red Cross supports the riders throughout the event,” Goldsworthy said. “They have support vehicles with supplies and can help with parts in case something like a breakdown happens. It’s a great partnership.”

Goldsworthy said he’s been preparing for the Tour since October.

He rides outside in fair weather and trains inside when the weather is cold or stormy.

Biking, Goldsworthy said, is excellent exercise both for mind and body.

“It’s easier on the joints than some other forms of exercise,” he said. “Cycling also allows an escape from everything, from technology, from cell phones. It gives you an hour or an hour and a half to decompress and think.”

The Tour du Rouge will be Goldsworthy’s longest distance ride to date, he said, adding he’s hoping for calm winds.

“The wind will be the biggest variable,” he said.

Several of his friends including former Lindsay mayor Steve Zwinggi and some other State Farm agents plan to join him on the Tour.

“I’m looking forward to the event,” Goldsworthy said. “It’ll be an adventure and a lot of fun for a good cause.”
